Description
Halfaya Pass, Egypt. 1942-11. The retreat of the Afrika Corps under Field Marshal Rommel from El Alamein. A combination of two aerial reconnaissance photographs shows this extraordinary scene. For miles along the coast road enemy vehicles stretch in an almost unbroken line as they press westward in an attempt to avoid the advancing Allies. On the extreme left the road leads to Salum Pass (beginning in a hairpin bend on the headland). At the left and in the centre are traffic blocks caused by road obstruction. On the right, vehicles are climbing Halfaya Pass en route to the top of the escarpment. The whole area is pitted with bomb craters.
