Description
Lingkas area, Tarakan, Netherlands East Indies, 1945-05-01. On the first day of Operation Oboe One, the attack and landing on Tarakan Island by troops of the 9th Australian Division, soldiers probably of 2/7th Field Regiment load a shell into a 25-pounder field gun set up on a rise overlooking a tropical beach. In the background, other Australian soldiers unload supplies from Landing Ship, Tank (LST) no. 151 of the US Navy's Amphibious Group Six which supported the landing. The LST has a Bofors anti-aircraft gun mounted on its deck. (Donor Dr Wootten)
