British Pattern 1891/1927 Naval Officer's Sword and Scabbard : Vice Admiral Sir Henry McKay Burrell, Royal Australian Navy
Pattern 1891/1927 Naval Officer's Sword and Scabbard. The hilt is a small gilt/brass solid half basket type with the Tudor crowned anchor cartouche badge and the lion head backstrap pommel. The back edge of the guard folds down as a clip onto the scabbard locket. A blue and gold sword knot is attached to the guard. The grip is gilt wire bound over white rayskin. The straight blade with a spear point has an etched rope and floral design for half the length with a crowned anchor on the left. The royal cypher of EIIR is on the right centre and the back edge is numbered 10880. The right ricasso has the interlocking triangle symbol surrounding a small brass 'approved' disc and BY APPOINTMENT OF THE LATE KING GEORGE on the left. The scabbard is black leather with three gilt brass fittings having an oak leaf and wave pattern design.
This sword was carried by Vice Admiral Sir Henry McKay Burrell, Chief of Naval Staff 1958-1962.
