Stalingrad, USSR. 1943. In the battle for Stalingrad, the Germans dropped supplies from the air for their encircled and doomed 6th Army. Here a transport aircraft makes a successful sortie over terrain covered in deep snow. Note the protective winter clothing of both horse and men. Many transport aircraft were shot down in these operations.
