Wearing stage costume, prisoners of war (POWs) at Marlag and Milag North [Marlag und Milag Nord], ...
Wearing stage costume, prisoners of war (POWs) at Marlag and Milag North [Marlag und Milag Nord], a Naval or Merchant Marine personnel POW camp, perform a play or concert on a specially prepared stage in one of the camp buildings. Most of the POWs are dressed as 19th century miners, though one of the actors (left) is sporting a top-hat and cane in the style of a rake or dandy. Another man (centre) is playing a guitar. As part of the stage decorations, the POWs have painted above the stage the figure of an anchor flanked by the letters 'M N' which stand for 'Merchant Navy'. The POWs are performing Act 1 Scene 1, 'Creek in the Rockies', from a musical comedy entitled 'Barbary Coast 1849', written and produced by a camp inmate, S J 'Stan' Hugill.
