Description

Phuoc Tuy province, Vietnam. c. 1966-10. A large number of men and vehicles of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) occupy an encampment or Fire Support Base (FSB) beside a road, possibly Route 15, in the Vietnamese countryside. In the foreground, a group of soldiers stands holding their rifles and carrying packs on their backs as they wait to go out on a patrol or operation. Three jeeps stand on the grass behind them (left), while several armoured personnel carriers (APCs) of 1APC Squadron are parked in a line along the edge of the road (right). Standing sideways among the APCs is a traditional Vietnamese wagon and further back some local buses are travelling along the road. In the midground (centre), some soldiers are showering under a makeshift shower in the field. Behind them stand a jeep and trailer and (left) a stack of wooden crates which may contain food supplies for the camp. Tents or hoochies are set up among the low bushes at rear, with large hills rising in the distance. (Donor F.A. Roberts)
