Description

A wrecked and burned out M113A1 armoured personnel carrier (APC) of A Squadron, 3 Cavalry Regiment, stands on a bare patch of ground at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base. The APC had been hit by three rounds of recoilless rifle fire during Operation Bribie in the Light Green on 1967-02-17, one of the rounds killing the driver, 3786644 Trooper Vic Pomroy.. The crew commander was Corporal Geoff Strachan, who was wounded. After the APC was disabled by the enemy shells, Australian soldiers set it on fire to prevent the Viet Cong from salvaging it for their own use. The APC was brought back to the 1ATF base the next day. A large roll of barbed wire rests in a gaping hole in the front of the vehicle. (Donor F.A. Roberts)
