Description

Rejoicing broke out spontaneously when the surrender of Japan was announced - the War was over. Left to right, Betty Williams, Lois Anne Martin and possibly Carmel O'Connor, three work mates from the Kodak factory at Abbotsford typified the joy and relief felt by all Australians. Miss Martin knitted the red, white and blue vest especially for VP day and never wore it again. She is also contributing to the noisy festivities by way of a hand cranked siren and her friends are waving Australian flags. She subsequently married Mr William (Bill) Drew who donated the vest to the Australian War Memorial on her death. Betty Williams subsequently married an ex-Serviceman, Mr Les Gibson. The photograph, cropped to include only Miss Martin, appeared on the front page of the Melbourne Herald that afternoon. Titled "V-P Fashion", the article stated "THIS GIRL had her V-P jumper all ready to wear for the day. To complete the picture she wrote an appropriate legend on her face with lipstick".
