Horse shoe case : Lieutenant Cowan
Officer's pattern, semi-circular shoe case to carry a spare front and hind shoe from the near side dees of an officer's Mark IV saddle. The case has a small internal pocket to carry horse shoe nails. The flap fastens with a single strap and brass buckle. There are two straps with inward facing brass buckles sewn to the back of the case that attach it to the saddle dees. The back is stamped with the manufacturer's details 'WHITEHOUSE & HARTLEY WALSALL 1914', and is further scratched with the owner's name 'Leut COWAN'.
This officer's pattern shoe case is unusual in that it fastens with a strap and buckle in place of the usual tab and brass stud arrangement, which was used to allow a sword frog to be attached to the lower part of the case. The case does not have a frog, nor does it have a staying strap, that would normally attach it to the centre girth point. Lieutenant Cowan cannot be further identified.
