Description

Macassar, Celebes, 1945-09. A Japanese suicide launch, Shinyo Improved Type 1, on a slipway in a cradle ready to be launched. The boats were designed as a one man suicide craft and were fitted with a large TNT charge in the bows or two depth charges mounted on the foredeck. This particular boat had two depth charges mounted on the foredeck, which have now been removed, and was powered by a 1929 Chevrolet six cylinder car engine. Standing in front of the boat is Paymaster Lieutenant D.J.M. Wyles RANR(S) from HMAS Warrego. (Donor J. Betty)
