Description

Bounded typed transcription of ten diaries of No. 2427 Trooper Jeffrey Thomas (Jeff) Holmes (initially 2nd Light Horse Regiment, later a Driver with 1st Field Squadron Engineers, Anzac Mounted Division), documenting his service in Egypt and Palestine between February 1916 and April 1919. Following his training at Tel-el-Kebir, the diaries describe in very long and detailed daily entries his experiences and impressions, including engagements with the Turks at or around Romani, Katia, Oghratina, Bir El Abd and El Arish in 1916; Rafa and Beersheba in 1917; and Amman (Jordan), Jericho and Es Salt in 1918. They comment particularly on his duties transporting supplies, maintaining equipment (especially gun carriage limbers), tending horses and participating in engineering support operations.
