Description

Bodies of dead US Marines, sprawled along the invasion beach on Tarawa Island near a crippled American tank. War debris litters the beach. In the background stripped coconut palms bear testimony to the fierceness of the battle. In capturing Tarawa, the Marines lost some 1000 killed and 2300 wounded.
