Truk, Caroline Islands. 1944-02-17/18. Japanese ships on fire near the coast following direct hits by Allied bombers during two days of raids on the major defence base. 270 Japanese aircraft and 32 ships were destroyed and the base put out of action, allowing the Carolines to be by-passed in the campaign against the Marianas.
