Inside front cover has presentation certificate affixed, which reads `Presented by Mrs. MacFean, TO THE MEMBERS OF THE N.S.W. CONTINENT OF AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE, by Friends of the N.S.W. Auxiliary of The British and Foreign Bible Society, Sydney, June, 1915, Chas.E.Bowen, Genl. Secretary. / The late Lord Roberts wrote: "I ask you to put your trust in God. You will find in this little book- guidance in health, comfort when in sickness, and strength when you are in adversity. ROBERTS, F.M.". On inside of fly leaf, handwritten in pen is - `C.Turvey No.688 B Coy. 19th Battalion 5th Brigade 14/8/15'. Published by the Oxford University Press, 1915.
Associated with 688 Private Charles Henry Turvey, B Coy, 19 Battalion. Turvey enlisted on 9 February, 1915 and embarked in June. The battalion arrived in Egypt in July and spent almost a month there before embarking for Gallipoli.
On 21 August the 19th Battalion landed at Gallipoli and bivouacced at Reserve Gully, the next day they were attached to the Indian Brigade under Major General Cox as reserve, south west of Susak Kuyu.
At some point that day, Turvey was killed and was buried in an isolated grave at the foot of the west slope of Damakjelik Bair near Damakjelik Kuyu, about 2 1/2 miles south east of Lala Baba. After the war the exact location of the grave was lost or his remains were found but were unidentifiable. As a result, Turvey has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli. His widow, Rebecca Evelyn Turvey died on 30 November 1915 apparently from the shock of her husband's death.
