C1944. The Survey Motor Boat (SMB) Endeavour, one of the two SMBs usually carried by HMAS Moresby. Endeavour is a 28 foot caravel built launch weighing about 5 tonnes and fitted with a six cylinder Volvo Penta marine petrol engine, giving a maximum speed of about 9 knots. The SMBs were divided into three compartments. The forward compartment was for storage of gear and was occupied by the forward hand; the middle compartment contained the motor, the responsibility of the stoker/mechanic; the aft compartment or cockpit was the preserve of the coxswain and survey partty, usually the survey recorder and the surveyor. Each compartment was covered by a hemspherical folding canvas dodger, stretched over metal hoops, and in tropical waters a make-shift awning was usually rigged ovewr the cockpit. Sub-Lieutenant J.L. Mallinson RANVR is standing with hands on hips, second from right.
