C 1944. The Survey Motor boat (SMB) Endeavour, one of the two SMD's usually carried by HMAS Moresby. Endeavour is a 28 foot carvel built launch weighing about 5 tons and fitted with a six cylinder Volvo Penta marine petrol engne giving a maximum speed of about 9 knots. The SMB's were divided into three compartments. The foward compartment was for storage of gear and was occupied by the foward hand; the middle compartment contained the motor, the responsibility of the stoker/mechanic; the aft compartment or cock pit was the preserve of the coxswain and survey party, usually the survey recorder and the surveyer. Each compartment was covered by a hemispherical folding canvas dodger, stretched over metal hoops, and in tropical waters a makeshift awning was usually rigged over the cockpit. Sub Lieutenant J.L. Mallinson RANVR is standing with hands on hips, second from right.
