Description
Vung Tau, Vietnam. 1967-12. Of the hundreds of gifts which poured into Vietnam for Australian soldiers, this 100lb Christmas cake probably aroused most interest among soldiers of 8th Field Ambulance at the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group (1ALSG) base. The artistically decorated cake was a gift from the 1st Mitchell Park Scout Group, South Australia. Injured soldier, Private (Pte) Patrick Caffery, 22, of Nowra, NSW, and Army nurse Lieutenant Colleen Mealy of Port Augusta, SA, admire the cake's designs. Pte Caffery suffered shrapnel wounds to his chest and legs when elements of 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR), were hit by Viet Cong rockets earlier in the month.
