1914-02-24 Formal portrait of Field Marshal Sir John French wearing full dress uniform and holding his Field Marshal's baton. French was appointed as Commander in Chief of the British Expeditionary Force to France on 4th August 1914. He was later replaced by General Haig as Commander in Chief in France.
