Ilolo, Papua, 1942-09. A group of officers of 2/4th Field Ambulance rests on and beside the front steps of McDonald's Ilolo homestead at the halfway point of a route march from the unit's camp near Bisiatabu to the homestead and back again. Members of the unit undertook a series of such route marches as part of a programme to improve their fitness in the two weeks prior to their setting out on the Kokoda Trail. Standing on the ground beneath the homestead (right) are several barrels bearing the label 'DD Motor Spirit'. (Donor A. Hobson)
