Description

Owers' Corner, Papua, 1942-10. A group of native carriers (right), who are known colloquially as 'fuzzy wuzzies', wait to pick up their loads from a large stack of 20-pound sandbags resting on the ground (left). Each carrier will carry two of the bags forward along the Kokoda Trail from this point, the end of the motor road from Port Moresby. The carriers, local Papuans and natives of New Britain, are employed by the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU). (Donor A. Hobson)
