Description
Imita Ridge, Papua, 1942-10. With a pack on his back and a walking stick in his hand, Sergeant Watt, a senior nursing orderly with the 2/4th Field Ambulance, pauses for a rest on the steep climb up the so-called 'Golden Stairs' towards Ioribaiwa. Each step is battened at its edge by a rough log which is slippery with a coating of mud. In climbing the stairs, soldiers had to lift their leg over the log and put their foot down on the step behind it in what was frequently a puddle of mud and water up to six inches deep. (Donor A.
