Myola 2, Papua, 1942-10-22. Australian soldiers examine a Stinson Reliant aircraft (right) which has crashed while attempting to land on the airstrip at Myola 2. In the background (left), a Ford tri-motor aircraft lies upturned at the end of the strip after flipping over in muddy ground as it too attempted to land earlier in the day. The Ford aircraft was flown by Mr T. O'Dea, an experienced civilian pilot, who was injured in the crash. O'Dea and the pilot of the Stinson had flown their aircraft into Myola as an experiment to see if patients could be evacuated by air from the 2/6th Field Ambulance to base hospitals in Port Moresby. The crash of these two aircraft, followed by that of another Stinson the following morning, led to the abandonment of all plans to evacuate patients by air from Myola. (Donor A. Hobson)
