Description
Soputa, Papua, 1942-11. Medical Officers (MOs) and other staff of 2/4th Field Ambulance perform an operation inside the tent (right) that serves as the operating theatre at the unit's Main Dressing Station (MDS). The native-style grass hut (left) houses the unit kitchen in which steam is rising from water boiling in a large pot or cauldron. The kitchen had to be located close to the operating theatre so that it could provide boiling water for the sterilisation of surgical instruments. A large canvas bag suspended from a tripod (centre) possibly holds sterile water for use in surgical operations or for drinking purposes or both. Japanese aircraft strafed and bombed the MDS on 1942-11-27. (Donor A. Hobson)
