Description
Soputa, Papua, c. 1942-11-30. A row of simple wooden crosses on the banks of the Girua River marks the graves of some of the 22 men killed on 1942-11-27 when Japanese Zero aircraft strafed and bombed the Main Dressing Station (MDS) of the 2/4th Field Ambulance, 7th Division Headquarters and the US Army's 126 Combat Clearing Station. The MDS was attacked in spite of the fact that a large Red Cross sign had been spread out on the ground to indicate to enemy aircraft that it was a medical unit. (Donor A. Hobson)
