Description

Soputa, Papua, c. 1942-11-30. Simple wooden crosses set up in a makeshift cemetery mark the graves of some of the 22 men killed on 1942-11-27 when Japanese Zero aircraft strafed and bombed the Main Dressing Station (MDS) of the 2/4th Field Ambulance, 7th Division Headquarters and the US Army's 126 Combat Clearing Station. The cross in the foreground (left) marks the burial site of VX14704 Major Hew Fancourt Graham McDonald, a Medical Officer (MO) who was serving with 2/4th Field Ambulance, while the cross in the foreground (right) marks the grave of a soldier named G.E. --tees. The MDS was attacked in spite of the fact that a large Red Cross sign had been spread out on the ground to indicate to enemy aircraft that it was a medical unit. (Donor A. Hobson)
