Description

Soputa, Papua, 1942-12. In the aftermath of monsoonal rains, a native Papuan labourer uses a shovel to deepen and widen a drainage channel in an attempt to drain away some of the water that has flooded the Main Dressing Station (MDS) of the 2/4th Field Ambulance at the camp known as Soputa 2. The MDS had been forced to move to this location in deep jungle from its former site in a clearing about a kilometre away after Japanese aircraft had strafed and bombed the unit, killing several of its members. The Papuan labourer is employed by the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU). (Donor A. Hobson)
