Members of the 2/4th Field Ambulance dole out the soldiers' beer ration from a stack of beer bottles lying on the ground inside a tent that may be the unit's orderly room. The beer may be Richmond Lager. In the background, other unit members, some of them bare-chested, queue up on parade to receive their ration which amounts to two large bottles of beer each, with each bottle having a capacity of 26 fluid ounces. An officer (right) appears to be checking off the soldiers' names or regimental numbers on a unit roll or sheet as each man receives his ration. Behind the officer, an NCO with a pipe in his mouth (right) is helping to supervise the parade. In the foreground, a large cardboard box resting on the ground bears the letter 'A' and the label 'Monte Carlo'.
