Kokoda, Papua, 1942-11. NX34655 Captain (Capt) Alan Oliver Watson, a Dental Officer serving with the 2/4th Field Ambulance, gives some dental treatment to a bare-chested patient in the open air at the unit's Main Dressing Station (MDS). Capt Watson is using a syringe to give his patient an injection of local anaesthetic. Note that Capt Watson is wearing epaulettes displaying his badges of rank, a practice that had ceased while the Field Ambulance was making its way over the Owen Stanley Range, but one which Major General A.G. Vasey, commander of the 7th Division, had subsequently ordered to be resumed.
