Description

Long Xuyen, South Vietnam. 1969-10. The Australian and Vietnamese flags are raised together during the opening of a new market place at the fishing village. Saluting the flags, left to right, are: the Commander of the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group (1ALSG), Colonel John Stevenson of Campbell, ACT; the Mayor of Vung Tau, Major Tinh; the Commanding Officer of the 1st Australian Civil Affairs Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Gration of Torrens, ACT. A sign above the building reads 'Thank (sic) to the Civilian Affaires (sic) Agency of the Royal Australian Forces'. The market was built by the Vietnamese with funds provided by the Australian External Aid Programme, and was supervised by the Civil Affairs Team from 1ALSG. The villagers are former refugees who were resettled in 1967.
