Description
Palmalmal Plantation, Gazelle Peninsula, New Britain. 1942-04-09. VX34177 Private (Pte) George Charles Russell, Signal Platoon, Headquarters Company, 2/22 Battalion, standing by the water at Palmalmal Plantation. He was one of a party of Australian troops retreating from Rabaul after the successful attack by Japanese forces on 1942-01-23. Pte Russell was one of 156 soldiers and civilians evacuated in April 1942 by the HMAS Laurabada. George was in poor condition and weighed six stone following the retreat.
