Description

Soputa, Papua, 1942-12. The gunyah or temporary shelter occupied by NX34655 Captain Alan Oliver Watson, Dental Officer with the 2/4th Field Ambulance, stands well camouflaged with jungle foliage at the unit's Main Dressing Station (MDS). Captain Watson's hat rests on the end of his rough timber-framed bed inside the gunyah, while standing in front of it (right) is the walking stick that he used along the Kokoda Trail. The stick, a native bow, was also Captain Watson's only weapon on the track as his personal revolver, a German Luger captured at Tobruk and given to him in Syria, had been stolen early on at Uberi.
