Jumbora, Papua, 1942-12. NX34655 Captain Alan Oliver Watson (left), Dental Officer with the 2/4th Field Ambulance, stands on the road at the so-called 'Jumbora Gates' with NX12340 Major Bruce Henderson Buddle of the 2/5th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). Parked in the middle of the road is jeep no. 75627 in which four soldiers are sitting. Another bare-chested soldier rests with a foot on the rear bumper bar of the vehicle as he smokes a cigarette. In the background, behind the jeep, two native Papuans are standing beside a picket fence made of tree branches which lines the road. As the officer responsible for roadworks in the area, Major Buddle supervised the building of new roads and the repair of old ones.
