Heliopolis, Egypt. 1916. Informal portrait of the three children of Mildred and Lieutenant Colonel Jack Rupert Cyril Davies, 12th Light Horse Regiment, in the gardens of the Heliopolis Palace Hotel. Left to right: Lloyd Davies (later served in the 2nd AIF), Barbara Davies, John Henry Davies (later served with the RAAF in WW2). Mrs Davies travelled from Australia with her family as a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) to supervise hospital and medical stores in the Cairo area. As well as being used as a hospital the Palace Hotel was also the place of residence for the medical staff of the local hospitals. (Donor E. Davies)
