Formal studio portrait in full military uniform of 3879 Gunner Edgar Woolls Rutledge MC MM. Rutledge was born in Sydney on 1896-11-02 and, at the time of his enlistment in 1914, he was living in Lindfield and was employed as a clerk. He served with No. 1 Battery, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 1st Divisional Artillery, on Gallipoli and later in France. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions in saving the life of a comrade in France on 1916-11-09. Subsequently, while serving as a lieutenant with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, he was awarded the Military Cross for his work as a Forward Observation Officer (FOO) at Bellicourt on 1918-09-29. Edgar Rutledge returned to Australia on 1919-04-12 and died on 1936-04-30 at the age of 39.
