Portrait of 411768 Aircraftman John S. Freeth, RAAF, in a city street prior to leaving for Canada with the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS). As a Sergeant with No. 455 Squadron, Freeth was killed in action on 1943-05-24 when his Handley Page Hampden torpedo aircraft collided with a Bristol Beaufighter aircraft during an exercise. Shortly before, on 1943-04-30, he and his crew attacked and sank an enemy submarine with eight depth charges. It was considered to be an outstanding achievement as the crew were untrained in the difficult skill of anti-submarine attack. (Donor D. Freeth)
