Description

Original Caption: "Allied aircraft were again active over enemy territory yesterday" - every time you read a communique like that, there has been a scene like this one, photographed at one of our forward bomber stations in New Guinea. (Negative by Parer).

North American B-25C Mitchell 41-12470 co-piloted by 407799 Flying Officer Edward Tompson Mobsby, RAAF at Seven Mile Drome, Port Moresby. Mobsby was lent to the 90th Squadron, 3rd Bombardment Group based at Charters Towers in late May 1942 and moved with them to Port Moresby in June 1942. On 26 July 1942 41-12470 and 41-12792 were shot down, Mobsby’s Mitchell was seen “burning fiercely from nose to tail”. Initially posted as "missing", in May 1943 Mobsby's remains and those of three others were found near their wrecked aircraft. Mobsby is buried in Bomana War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea. A tray cloth made by his wife Joyce Mobsby is held in the collection [see REL25755.]
