Description
South Vietnam. 1970-01. Troop Sergeant (Sgt), Alan Buckingham of Gympie, Qld, gives the go (thumbs up) sign to 3 Troop of B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, as it prepares to move from its night position. Driving the armoured personnel carrier (APC), call sign 39J, is Trooper Vern Judd of Cobden, Vic. Sgt Buckingham's APC was one of forty four armoured vehicles involved in Operation Matilda, the largest Australian armoured operation since World War 2. The force of APCs, Centurion tanks, plus recovery and load vehicles swept through three provinces hounding the Viet Cong in areas long regarded as VC sanctuaries. Note the roll of mesh wire attached at the front.
