Portrait of NX42191 Private (Pte) Keith Botterill of Katoomba, NSW. Pte Botterill served with the 2/19 Battalion and was taken prisoner of war in Malaya, subsequently imprisoned at Sandakan, North Borneo. He was one of only six survivors from the 1100 prisoners forced to undertake the infamous death marches from Sandakan to Ranau. Pte Botterill escaped from Ranau with NX19750 Lance Bombardier William D. Moxham of Toongabbie, NSW; NX58617 Pte Nelson A. E. Short of Woollahra, NSW and QX6866 Pte F. D. Anderson of Kelvin Crove, Qld, who died on 29 July 1945 in the jungle.
