Description

Flashlight in hand, Sapper (Spr) Trevor Hughes of Beenleigh, Qld, emerges from the gloom of a cave in the Long Hai mountains during Operation Hammersley. The cave held a cache of rocket propelled grenades and weapons which were added to those found in other caves. Spr Hughes, an engineer from the 1st Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), was attached to C Company, 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR), for a sweep of the mountains after they had been bombarded from land, sea and air for three days. A few days before, C Company had fought an estimated company of Viet Cong in the area.
