Farmer, Reginald William Bartlett (Lieutenant, b.1888 - d.1918)
Correspondence written during 1970s-1980s, between RAN officers commanding HMAS "Torrens"(1971- ) and relatives of Lieutenant Reginald William Bartlett Farmer, who served on the original HMAS "Torrens" (1915-1926) regarding his personal history and especially his officer's sword. 2. Copies of original letters written by Farmer to his family while serving on ships prior to the First World War, including the barque "Invergarry". 3. Copy of a letter, dated 12 October 1918, written by Gerald W. McEwen (a close friend of Farmer while on "Torrens"), accounting for Farmer's sudden death in Italy (Messina) caused by serious illness, and description of reactions and tributes by shipmates, hospital staff at Messina and Italian officers. 4. Short history of Farmer's life, written by his sister "Kath". 5. Letter from a senior librarian at Maritime Services Board (NSW), relating to a request by Commander R. Swinnerton of HMAS "Torrens" for information on Farmer's rank and qualifications for maritime service. 6. Copy of a register extract at Maritime Services Board(NSW), showing Farmer's name for certificates as Second and First Class Mate of Foreign-going ships, and as Compass Adjuster. 7. Illustrated RAN publicity leaflet for current version of HMAS "Torrens", a destroyer escort launched in 1968 and commissioned in 1971.
