Sergeant (Sgt) Allen Clement of Greenacre, NSW, places the wedding ring onto his American bride's finger, Staff Sergeant Christine Matthews of Chicago, Illinois, USA, in a unique ceremony in Saigon. It is the first time in the Vietnam war that an Australian soldier has married an American servicewoman. They had met while both were working at the American base at Long Binh, about fifteen miles north of Saigon. Sgt Clement was the Australian Army Ordnance Corps liaison NCO at the base.
