Description

Medical reports and other documents relating to NX71114 Captain Leslie Poidevin's service as a doctor with 'A' Company, 2/12th Field Ambulance, Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC), especially in the prisoner of war (POW) camps of Timor and Tanjong Priok, Java, between 1941 and 1945.
The collection contains:
(1) Typescript and handwritten medical record (disease and disabilities), 1941-1944, kept by Dr Poidevin on Timor and Java with details of mainly surgical cases, including identified case reports (formerly DRL 3/2130 and AWM27/376/43); (2) Typescript copy of part of the above item viz general unit, medical and surgical reports; (3) Handwritten medical record, 1941-1942, including uncensored drafts of the above report, notes on the conditions of the camps, medical reporting sheets and nominal rolls of RAAMC personnel and patients; (4) Photocopy of a citation by Lieutenant Colonel C.W. Maisey commending Dr Poidevin's work to the War Office; (5) Photocopies of letters relating to his treatment of a patient on HMS Cumberland in September 1945; (6) Photocopy of a typescript draft of an address by Dr Poidevin at a memorial service for Colonel Sir Edward (Weary) Dunlop, 13 July 1993; (7) October 1941 issue of The First Aider: 2/12 Field Ambulance Souvenir Magazine containing an annotated nominal roll; (8) Original manuscript and copy of 'Samurais and Circumcisions' by L. Poidevin; (9) various typed and annotated manuscripts, including 'Doctor in Heaven', 'Come in Doctor : a country practice revisited', 'Goodbye Doctor' and associated material.

Collection also contains typed and handwritten transcripts reflecting upon themes such as his return to civilian life and experiences in POW camps.
