Stradbroke Island. 9 December 1966. Full military honours for Private Erald Herman Nilsen, who was buried on Stradbroke Island on Friday. Private Nilsen, of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR), died in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, from gunshot wounds on 14 November. The entire population of Dunwich stopped work to attend the funeral at St Marks Church of England, and afterwoods at the Dunwich Cemetery. The Returned Services League (RSL) members marched in full strength and about 100 school children lined the streets between the church and the cemetery. The firing party, bearer party and official mourners were supplied from the 2nd Battalion, RAR.
