Townsville, Qld. 22 May 1968. Families and friends farewell members of 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR), as they sail from Brisbane aboard HMAS Sydney for service in Vietnam. More than 2000 people lined the wharfside and showered the soldiers with multi-coloured streamers as the ship departed. The 4th Battalion, raised at Woodside, SA, on 1 February 1964, is making its first tour of operational duty in Vietnam. It will join the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF), at Nui Dat, and replace 2RAR which returns to Brisbane after twelve months service in Vietnam.
