Description

Lavarack Barracks, Townsville, Qld. 18 August 1968. The battle of Long Tan was recalled by these three members of the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess of 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR). All were member of D Company at the battle of Long Tan in South Vietnam two years ago. They had taken part in the parade which saw the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr John Gorton, present the United States Presidential Citation to D Company before 2500 people at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville. The battle is recalled in the Mess after the function by, left to right: Warrant Officer Class 2 Ron Gildersleeve of Swansea, NSW; Sergeant Paul Anderson of Ascot, Qld, and Sergeant Bob Buick, MM, of Bentley, WA, who won his decoration in the battle.
