Members of the 170th Independent Mortar Battery Royal Artillery, turn away and block their ears ...
Description
Members of the 170th Independent Mortar Battery Royal Artillery, turn away and block their ears in an attempt to protect themselves from the explosion of a 4.2 inch mortar. A soldier wearing a slouch hat stands in the background with his fingers in his ears trying to block the noise. Mortar bombs and packing tubes lie on the ground near the mortar. Note the military truck parked further back along the road. 4.2 inch mortars can fire high explosive ammunition, as well as white phosphorus projectiles to create smoke screens, and luminescent rounds. This mortar is fitted to a mobile baseplate for towing behind a vehicle. The battery are in support of the 29th British Infantry Brigade.
