S Mi 35 Antipersonnel Shrapnel Mine (Sectioned)
The S Mi 35 antipersonnel shrapnel mine was a standard antipersonnel mine used by the German Army during the Second World War. The mine is cylindrical in shape and is operated by direct pressure or by a trip-wire device. An inner cylinder of pressed steel is fitted into the outer jacket which rests on a metal disk which is attached to the bottom of the outer cover. A cover plate is attached to the mine. The charge is contained in a moveable cylinder which is screwed to the disk in the bottom of the mine. This cylinder has a central tube and three other parallel tubes. The central tube is for the igniter and the detonator can be inserted into any of the three other tubes. This mine has been sectioned to show the internal layout of its mechanism. The top of the mine is stamped with a small German eagle under which is "Wa A 697", below this to the right is "UK" and below this is "1939/88".
