Description
1945. Seaman A. B. Brian Kane holds a wooden crocodile, mascot of RAN Corvette HMAS Latrobe, above his head while standing at the bow. The mascot, named George, was carved by Torres Strait Islanders. It was discovered floating in the sea off Thursday Island, retrieved and mounted forward of the bridge, aft of the 4 inch gun. After being in place for more than eighteen months, it was removed after HMAS Latrobe received an official instruction. George also appears as part of the unusual and unofficial coat of arms which is featured on the ship's pennant.
