South Vietnam. June 1970. Sapper (Spr) Ralph Schaefer of Wodonga, Vic, uses a Viet Cong (VC) bamboo ladder to take a demolition charge down into a VC well at a bunker system found by soldiers of 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR), on an operation near Long Tan, six miles east of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base at Nui Dat. Helping him with the charge is Spr Ian Pitt of Beaufort, Vic. Both are engineers of 2 Troop, 1st Field Squadron.
