South Vietnam. July 1970. Three Army surveyors line up a survey beacon on top of an old French fort. They are, left to right: Sapper John Walker of Young, NSW; Second Lieutenant John Whitburn of Clovelly Park, SA; Corporal Kerry Gallagher of Recliffe, Qld. The three are serving with the Army's Topographical Survey Troop, based at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base at Nui Dat. The twenty two man unit is responsible for producing maps of Phuoc Tuy Province, the Task Force's area of operations.
